Old Wood Hollow Puppy Picks

When it comes to puppy products, there are too many to choose from. We have big dogs all around, with the exception of our spaniel, so whatever we use needs to be able to stand up to our big dogs. While they have been known to chew through the better part of a Kong, they also make for a fairly accurate concentration group. Between the five of them we can figure out what works pretty quickly.

All of these items can be found in Old Wood Hollow’s shop on Amazon.

  1. Carhartt Dog Bed. We recommend the dark brown, but it really depends on what kind of dog (or decor) you have. We are a big fan of the washable bed cover, because mud season is about 3/4 of the year here. Like all Carhartt products, these beds are HARDY. $130 CAD
  2. Tug Toy. In the large size, this tug toy works great with our cattle dog. One of his favourite games is tug of war and he’s anything but gentle with his toys. $29 CAD
  3. Platypus Soft Chew Toy. Let’s face it, most of these toys don’t last a lifetime. But it’s nice if they last a little while, at least. Our Dalmatian loses his mind for anything that squeaks, including actual rabbits and guinea pigs, so having an alternative helps quite a bit. If you do have an aggressive chewer, I would shy away from this toy, though. $28 CAD
  4. Pineapple Chew Toy. This toy is too cute. The dogs love to pick it up and carry it around, dropping it and watching it bounce across the room. And for only $20 CAD, it’s a reasonable purchase.
  5. Roam Collars. We’ve lost more than a few collars in the fields out here–which means they need to be easy to find when we do. This particular kind of clip is my favourite, both because of its solid clasp and the look of it (there’s even an extra loop for name tags). The extra holding strap helps when the delivery man shows up unannounced. We opted for the Size 5 for our dogs, but the sizes range all the way down to Yorkie size. $74 CAD
  6. Elevated Feeder (for smaller dogs or travel). We have a custom made feeder in our house and the dogs always prefer to eat from elevated bowls–every time. We haven’t had a chance to review the bigger models yet, but this smaller version is a solid version for our shorter trips to the cabin in the summer, given how sturdy it is. The pop of colour is just a bonus. $39 CAD
  7. Wilderdog Harness. I cannot say enough about these harnesses. We’ve tried quite a few and this one stands up the best on our walks and runs. We don’t use collars on runs, especially given how they can slip off. They are high-quality, like all of the products from Wilderdog. The colours and design keep things fresh and their harnesses actually fit our dogs comfortably. We use a size medium for our GSD puppy, to give you an idea of sizing. $71 CAD
  8. Field & Wander Dog Leash. I like the simplicity of these leashes, for every day walks. I don’t use them for running (see that post here) but I like these for forest walks, given how light they are and easy to store. $29 CAD
  9. Slow Feeder Lick Mat. These mats are amazing. This one is a little pricier, but I like how linear it is, following the natural groove of your dog’s tongue. Most of our dogs are fairly relaxed eaters, but this is wonderful for those dreaded salon days, when I’m trying to deal with nail clipping and removing burrs from our spaniel’s ears. $33 CAD
