When I was six, I learned what a horse was. Befor When I was six, I learned what a horse was. Before that, I had spent my years in and out of foster homes, so survival took up a lot of my time. Once I somehow got to where I was supposed to be, the first thing my foster mother (and later adoptive mother) did was take me to see her horses. “Would you like to learn to ride?” She asked. “Horses helped me sort of a lot of things. Some things that were hard to make words around…”. She winked. It was never about riding, not then. But bringing a lost little girl to a run down stable was probably the very best thing she ever did for me. And she did a lot. I mean, it definitely might be a mental illness but I think it’s one of the good ones, as long as I remain gainfully employed✨ #horsetherapy #horses #leopardappaloosa

I think it might be genetic. The minute our daugh I think it might be genetic. The minute our daughter could walk she was headed to the pasture, three fingers in her mouth, toddling about in the hopes that I wouldn’t catch her before she got to the fence. She’d barrel through dogs, pigs, goats or her brothers to get to the horses. Despite being relatively reasonable, she never let her fear overwhelm her curiosity. It never stopped. And I am thrilled to report that she’s safely over her pony phase (thank you, Bentley) and now listens to her mum when she’s riding. ✌️ #horsekids #horsegirl #ponysquad #horses #equus #ponies

Jolene was the worst puppy of all time. Some of Jolene was the worst puppy of all time. Some of you probably remember. I second guessed a lot of my training choices, but tried to base them on the core of what was best about her: her heart. Many times I thought she’d be better off in a different environment, or maybe that I wasn’t what was best for her. In the end, she was where she was supposed to be, like I was. I say this because it isn’t just about the dog. I second guess myself a lot, when things don’t fit into boxes. I overthink all the things and worry myself right out of the action of doing. In the end, my instincts aren’t so far off, if I shut off all the voices, both inside and out❤️✨. Happy MONDAY.

I’m not good with grief. I’ve shared a ton o I’m not good with grief. I’ve shared a ton on here about the animals we’ve lost. And I’ve read the comments telling me that they’re only dogs, or cats or horses. That they are “only”. And yet. My Lyra girl is the only thing that got me out of bed when my father passed, before I became a mum. She’d run with me for miles until I had emptied out my chest. And so, when she felt it was time to go, after the birth of all my children, I owed her a debt. An animal, yes-but one that had done more for me than most humans. Loki was in the room with me when my mum died. He tried to tell me she was leaving, but it was hard to understand-it’s difficult to wrap your head around losing a port in the storm. I went to a hotel that night, in a town that I have never tried to know, while he stayed tucked into my legs until I fell asleep. He never complained about how loud I was crying. Animals are good. There is honesty in animals, something that I have found difficult to find in humans, and sometimes myself. So you should know, if you are still reading, that it is okay if you still miss your dog. Your horse. Your cat. It is a loss that does deserve your attention. It will always❤️. #petlosssupport *This was me picking up Dumbledore off the cargo plane when we moved to BC in 2020.

I don’t think anyone has told them that they can I don’t think anyone has told them that they can’t lay eggs. Welcome useless ducks. But I’ve embraced this part of myself where I’ve stopped trying to justify the adoption of creatures for any reason other than the fact that they bring me joy. My reason to husband was, “When they honk they sound like they’re laughing.” I’d let them roam and eat slugs but I’m certain Firefly would eat them. So 😬🫣. #ducks #runners #spaniels #sillygoose

This morning ate up all my feelings. Most Mondays This morning ate up all my feelings. Most Mondays do. It’s a bunch of silly things that don’t mean much, so I went for a run before I fell down the well. It helped. It always helps. It smelled like snow coming and fir trees and our dogs were getting high on the breeze. It almost made me forget about the fence that I need to go home and rebuild. Again. 😆 And if you were wondering, spaniels make great running companions. It’s like having a pet badger but grosser.

All of you are gone now. This fence still stands All of you are gone now. This fence still stands, as does the field. I hope it will hold the ghosts of you forever, in this moment when you were all young. Wild. Free. Full of love. And loved. Yesterday we said goodbye to Henry. Adopted as a feral kitten from the boroughs of some barn before I had even thought about children. Tougher than any dog. Calm. Patient with our babies when they came. Patient with us as life ebbed and flowed. Rest easy, Henry. You meant the darned world to me. I think Dumbledore will be pretty happy to see you✨.
